UC Health Sciences Research in the Valley

Research is a defining feature of a UC-quality medical school. It is increasingly understood that health of the environment and human health are inextricably linked. UC Merced has created an interdisciplinary environment that provides unique opportunities to link human health with the health of the environment.

UC Merced is building strong programs in health sciences and environmental sciences, with stellar faculty and research facilities. Broad research themes that cross School boundaries include health of the environment and human health. Basic and applied sciences are underpinnings of medical schools. In addition to ongoing growth in these areas, UC Merced has a unique opportunity to develop signature programs in population health that leverage interest and expertise across the campus.

Integrated research in the natural, social, and engineering sciences to address health of the environment, sustaining natural resources and promoting social well being, particularly in the San Joaquin Valley and Sierra Nevada regions of California, is carried out under auspices of the Sierra Nevada Research Institute.

Integrated research in basic and applied health sciences is carried out in all schools and the Health Sciences Research Institute. Research programs leverage expertise across all schools on campus, including areas such as:

  • Bioengineering
  • Chronic disease
  • Cognitive sciences
  • Infectious disease
  • Informatics
  • Multicultural health
  • Prevention
  • Psychology
  • Stem cell biology

UC Merced's interdisciplinary environment and state-of-the art technologies and approaches provide unique opportunities to link human health with the health of the environment. This integration will lead to an increased understanding of the social, behavioral, economic, environmental and biological determinants of health.
